Why people ask for a second opinion
People ask for one to understand a new diagnosis or stage, to compare options before a major treatment decision, or when treatment is not going as expected. It does not mean changing doctors.
What to bring
- Imaging reports and the images: CT, MRI, PET-CT, ultrasound, mammogram or X-ray
- Pathology and biopsy reports, including any biomarker or genetic test results
- The proposed treatment plan and letters from your current doctor
- Treatment so far (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy), with drug names and dates
- Recent blood tests, including tumour markers if done
- Current medicines and allergies
- Your questions, written down
What the doctor reviews
- The diagnosis and what the pathology report shows
- The stage and extent of the cancer on imaging
- The proposed or current plan, with reference to current international treatment guidelines
- Other options that may apply: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy or palliative care
- Whether further tests, such as imaging or cancer genetic testing, would add useful information
The doctor explains the findings and options in plain language, and you decide with your doctors. Not everyone needs treatment straight away. Some tests and treatments, including radiotherapy and day-care drug treatment, are arranged at private hospitals after the doctor's assessment.
